Greater Toronto Area

Future Leaders empowers Young Professionals to make a positive difference in the lives of others. By working together Future Leaders is dedicated to providing youth with a forum to contribute to the development of solutions for a better tomorrow.

Toronto has the resources, the creativity and the human spirit to be one of the greatest city regions of the 21st century. With its five million residents, one-fifth of Canada’s entire GDP and 40 per cent of Canada’s business head offices, the Greater Toronto Area is Canada’s largest driver of economic activity and the source of significant spin-off jobs throughout the country.

Canadians want our country to be the finest in the world – the best place to live and work. To accomplish this, Canada needs outstanding leadership and Future Leaders is building these leadership skills in Canada’s future – today’s young professionals and entrepreneurs.

Future Leaders aspires to be the premier provider of hands-on business experiences, and seeks to make this experience affordable and available for all interested participants. Our group seeks to be inclusive and is open to young people from all walks of life.

The projects presented in the Future Leaders organization will help improve leadership skills and enhance personal and professional development. These skills are easily transferable to other contexts in their working lives.

By working on specific projects together, volunteers will have the opportunity to develop important skills in project management, marketing, communications and other critical areas of business.

To contribute to the advancement of Canada and the Global community by providing the opportunity for young people to develop the leadership skills, social responsibility, entrepreneurship and fellowship necessary to create positive change.

Volunteering

Volunteer for the CEO Speaker Series

Canadians who volunteer their time, energy and talents to charitable and non-profit organizations play an important role in improving their communities and the lives of others - philanthropy and volunteering continue to be vibrant characteristics of Canadian life.

Volunteering gives people opportunities to learn and gain experience that isn’t necessarily available in their work or home lives.

According to the National Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating (NSGVP)
© 2004 Canadian Centre for Philanthropy :

• More than three quarters (79%) of volunteers reported gaining interpersonal skills, such as the ability to understand people better, motivate people, and deal with difficult situations.

• More than two thirds (68%) reported learning better communication skills, such as public speaking, writing, public relations, and conducting meetings.

• Over half (57%) said they gained organizational skills, such as how to organize resources, manage the work of others, be a leader, plan, and run an organization.

• Nearly two thirds of unemployed volunteers (62%) said that their volunteer activity would help their chances of finding a job.

• More than one third (37%) reported that volunteering allowed them to learn new skills that could be directly applied to a job. Youth aged 15-24 were more likely than any other age group to report this benefit.

LEARNING by HELPING

Future Leaders program
gives young entrepreneurs
chance to shine in non-profit ventures

Article from the Richmond Hill Liberal and York Region Group of newspapers

July 7, 2005

When the non-profit Trails Youth Initiative needed a hand sprucing up its Aurora camp in 2003 , it turned to a program specializing in helping young business professionals develop their skills.

The result was a team from Future Leaders of Greater Toronto grabbing paint brushes and getting to work.

More than 500 young professionals from across the GTA have participated in one way or another in the group's activities, which range from bringing in guest speakers from the corporate world to networking events to raising money for good causes.

"It's an opportunity for them to get engaged and build leadership skills," said Future Leaders founder Sanjiv Khullar. "You learn by doing and we have various projects throughout the year where we get members chairing those projects or being part of a team." In the case of Trails Youth Initiative, there was much more to the project than picking the right paint colour. Because of Future Leaders' non-profit status, painting materials and refreshments all had to be donated by companies, which meant writing up proposals and developing those persuasive skills considered so important in the business world.

The benefits for both the camp and the future leaders were obvious, Mr. Khullar said. "To paint that campsite would have cost them thousands of dollars, easily," he said. "But for them to get 20 people up there for two days painting eight to 10 hours a day -- I mean, what we accomplished was amazing. The bonding, the interaction, the communication skills ... you can take this experience and back to your professional life."

June 2004 Community Leadership Project

The June 2004 Community Leadership Project was another great success. Following on last year's fall painting event, Future Leaders spent Saturday June 12 and Sunday June 13 working hard and playing hard for Trails Youth Initiative's camp for inner city youth at risk in Aurora.
