The June 2004 Community Leadership
Project was another great success. Following
on last year's fall painting event, Future Leaders spent
Saturday June 12 and Sunday June 13 working hard and playing
hard for Trails Youth Initiative's camp for inner city youth
at risk in Aurora.
Future Leaders volunteers spent Saturday and Sunday building
a 3km walking trail through wet lands at the Trails Youth
Initiatives Camp north of Toronto. Using materials donated
by local companies, volunteers created a nature walk to
give downtown youth their first real taste of Ontario's
natural beauty. "When we began on Saturday morning
we were strangers but by Saturday night had become good
friends" reported one of the volunteers.
The event was capped by a great leadership talk from Jim
Hayhurst Sr. founder of Trails. Jim passed on his inspiration
and drive: 'Identify your passion and then figure out how
to make a living doing that' was the core of Jim's message.
The Trails Youth Initiative is a not-for-profit charity
founded to help disadvantaged kids from Toronto learn about
self-confidence, self-respect and leadership. This multi-year
program has an unbeatable track record working with young
kids to help them become college and university candidates
facing a world of opportunity versus rudderless teens in
a world of violence, crime and fading hope.
Future Leaders
is committed to working with youth based community initiatives
and proud to contribute to such a worthwhile cause. Future
Leaders is proud to contribute to such a worthwhile cause.

Dear Future Leaders
Spring-Build Community Leadership Crew
WOW – what a GREAT JOB!!!
The board walk and bridges look FANTASTIC!!! I am so very
impressed by the work that all of you have done. Thank you
so much. Tomorrow (July 6) twenty Trails participants will
be walking across your bridges and board walks as they take
their first steps on a five year journey of challenge, learning,
opportunity and growth.
As a small not-for-profit we really do struggle every year
to make ends meet. It is through the hard work and thoughtful
consideration of people like yourselves that we can change
some of the attitudes and hardships that our inner city
youth face daily. Without your help there is no way we could
accomplish all we do – and we feel we have accomplished
a lot.
• We have been operating since 1992 without any form of
government assistance.
• We have positively influence over 1200 child years through
our year round learning programmes.
• We are a registered Private School with the Ontario Ministry
of Education, offering 3.5 high school credits for kids
who need that extra helping hand.
• 76% of our graduates attend college or university, compared
to 24% of their peers.
• 88% of all donations go to our charitable works compared
to the industry norm and accepted standard in Canada of
only 60%.
But these are just some of the facts. The real power of
our programme is in the amazing strength of our participants
who have overcome incredible odds to become contributing
members of their communities. And none of this would be
possible without the dedication and hard work of people
like you who volunteer their time to create positive change
in our community.
Thanks so very much. You have made a real difference and
in some cases you literally have contributed to saving lives.
I say this not to be melodramatic or over dramatize; I say
it because it is true. I have seen it and kids have told
me that they would not be here if it wasn’t for Trails …
and Trails wouldn’t be here if not for the kind dedication
and hard work of people like you.
Thank you for caring, thank you for making a difference.
From all the staff and kids
of Trails – THANKS!
Most sincerely,
Kevin Farrell

This was a great cause, with great people!
Ross, IBM employee
Great feeling of satisfaction
Good exercise Fun to be out in the woods Met some great
people Great to make something happen out of nothing
Mark, MBA - Business Development Software
I was impressed to see how a group of people,
most of whom did not know one another, could come together
quickly to achieve a definite goal. The cooperation was
amazing -- if the effectiveness of our group could be translated
to our workplaces we would achieve extraordinary results.
Michael - Lawyer
Personally, it was great
to feel I was doing something that would benefit someone
else.
Professionally, it was a good opportunity to reflect about
group dynamics and my own leadership skills.
Also, participation in organizations like Future Leaders
is something companies appreciate, it demonstrate leadership,
commitment with the community and determination for integral
personal development.
Yineska, MBA - CIBC
The event was an excellent opportunity
to expand and think outside the box that we are usually
constrained in during our day to day activities. SK
I was
forced to break out of my comfort zone and approach people
I didn't know. I had to learn their personality and learn
how to better work with them.
Janaya, RMC Grad
Networking with people from
different walks of life. It's also fulfilling to be able
to do charity work for the community that you live in.
This was
an excellent weekend, not only to help out the trails organization,
but also to socialize with a variety of people and see how
a group formed during the project.
